Message from The Head of School

Head of School Stephanie B. Whitney

It is my pleasure to introduce you to The Mead School. At Mead, we care that our children are engaged and active in learning. Walking through the hallways, you will hear joyful voices and the hum of purposeful work. Children are smiling, and begin each day with a sense of excitement about what awaits them. Mead provides children with experiences they should have, along with experiences they must have, to be their best selves – thoughtful, engaged and independent community members, creative thinkers and self-advocates.

We honor reflection here. Mead develops fully conscious, self-aware individuals. Many of our students begin their journey at Mead as infants, while others join our ranks in later years. We believe that deep learning comes through a combination of mental and physical engagement, balancing traditional skill mastery with developing a critical eye and inquisitive thinking. We honor our children’s perspectives and appreciate the experiences of those around us. Our graduates become engineers, oceanographers, doctors, musicians, fighter pilots, lawyers, educators, dancers, entrepreneurs and writers. We are proud that they are also thoughtful contributors to their communities.

Mead’s caring and engaging environment creates the best atmosphere for children to find their passions, stretch their comfort zones and learn to comfortably take some risks. We encourage our students to understand and find meaning in every pursuit, academically, artistically, athletically, socially and emotionally. Our students expect to ask and answer hard questions, form close relationships with their peers and teachers, and have the confidence and skills to step in and step up to opportunities daily.

Please take your time exploring our web pages. I truly hope you’ll want to come see our school, as we believe a personal visit is by far the best way to experience the Mead difference.
