"Sound Resilience"

The 6th Grade Marine Science students had a visit from Maritime Aquarium educators, teaching the first of a three-week curriculum called "Sound Resilience." NOAA funds these classes in an effort to educate our future leaders about climate change, damage from extreme weather events such as hurricanes, and how communities can become more resilient to the damage caused by these storms.

In the first class, students first received a lesson about extreme weather, the difference between "weather" and "climate," and examples of storm damage from recent storms such as Irene and Sandy. They then took part in an experience of the three most common types of coastal wave protection, creating waves to see what damage happens despite each protection method.
