Public Purpose - MLK Jr.
Last week, our students honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in our first public purpose activity. Students from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade collaborated and engaged in meaningful work that promoted unity and community engagement. Our 7 and 8th-grade students were rehearsing for our upcoming Shakespeare production.
As we continue to emphasize the importance of public purpose work, we are thrilled to announce a new 4-week program that will provide opportunities for students to participate in creative problem-solving and team-building activities. This program will foster a sense of community within our school and prepare students to make a positive impact in the broader world.
Our kickoff event took place last week, in conjunction with MLK Day, which has become recognized as a Day of Service and Impact. During the event, 5th and 6th-grade students lead a read-aloud of the inspiring book "Martin's Big Words" by Doreen Rappaport. Following the story, students brainstormed words that represented the values essential to the growth of our Mead community, such as love, understanding, acceptance, and joy. In their assigned buddy pairs or small groups, students then used colored pencils to decorate a pin featuring their chosen words. These pins will serve as a source of pride and unity as we continue to work together toward a more compassionate and connected community.
We look forward to seeing our students take part in this exciting initiative and continue to build a strong, inclusive, and impactful community at Mead School.
