Middle School Math...and Motorcycles!
Experiential learning in math is an effective way to help students overcome their math anxiety, understand the real-life usefulness of what they’re learning, and most importantly, have fun while learning math. Jon Tang, Curriculum Director of Math for grades 6-8, brought his personal passion (beyond math!) to his study of units and ratios to the middle school students this week. He incorporated his motorcycle into the lessons, and the students loved it.
One student used a stopwatch to time how long it took Jon to ride 5 laps around the parking lot on his motorcycle. Once the data was collected, the class calculated the unit rate of how many laps Jon can do per minute, and then calculated how long it would take Jon to do 19 laps.
