Mead Honored to Zoom with Holocaust Survivor
This week our 7th and 8th grade students and faculty were incredibly honored to host a Zoom with Judith Altmann, a World War II concentration camp survivor. Ms. Altmann has extensive experience speaking in schools, is a member of the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Speakers Bureau, and is Vice President of the Holocaust Child Survivors of Connecticut.
The opportunity for a Holocaust survivor to speak to our students who have studied Elie Wiesel's "Night", holds immense importance in shaping their understanding of history and human resilience. This connection with Ms. Altmann serves to educate and foster empathy, critical thinking, and a commitment to preventing such atrocities in the future.
Students had the opportunity to ask Ms. Altmann questions about her life, and along with her responses, she imparted some powerful messages to them: "There is no room for hatred." - "You are our future and have the ability to make the world better." - "Hug your parents, grandparents, siblings. You are so lucky to have them." - "Learn as much as you can as a student. The languages I knew helped me to survive because I was useful. Knowledge is powerful." - "When the sun came out, we had hope."
