1-2 Social Studies Field Trip

1-2 Social Studies Field Trip

The first and second graders have been learning about parks and playgrounds in their social studies class this semester. Through books, videos, and physically playing on various playgrounds, they gathered information and knowledge answering two essential questions: What is a playground? How are playgrounds built?

The students explored the multiple playgrounds at the Mead School and took a field trip to explore two playgrounds in the Stamford Community, Chestnut Hill Playground and the playground at the Stamford Nature Center.

On the field trip, students were posed with critical thinking questions to drive their time at the playgrounds:

  1. What types of climbing structures are there at this playground?

  2.  Is it handicap accessible?

  3. What are the unique features of this playground?

  4. How does this playground differ from the ones at Mead? And the one you built with your partner?

  5. Now that you have played on this playground, do you feel like you would add anything to it to make it more fun for people your age?

  6. How would you add/take from the playground you built?

  7. If you could rate this playground on a scale of 1-10 what would you rate it? 1 - I did not like it at all and I would never go back and 10 - This is the best playground ever!
