Sports & Activities at Mead

Ensuring children are active & challenge themselves through participation is key to our philosophy.

 

After School Activities

Our After School Program is available to children in Grades K - 8. We offer staff-based curriculum and sports-based activities covering a wide variety of subjects by both Mead faculty and outside vendors. Programs run throughout the year and change seasonally.
 


SPRING TRIMESTER 2019

MONDAYS - TENNIS for Beginners and Advanced Beginners: Grades K - 3
Fairfield County Tennis is offering tennis lessons for Beginner and Advanced Beginners. This clinic will introduce forehand, backhand, volley and serve and use 10 and under tennis teaching methods along with red and orange tennis balls specifically designed for the younger player. Students will learn to play tennis while also learning fundamentals of the game in a fun environment.

Racquets will be available for sale for $25.

TUESDAYS – GRAFFITI ART with Adam Ellyson: Grades 1 - 8
Kick start your interest in spray painting and the popular culture of graffiti art. Class covers the history of graffiti with projects aligning all different styles and current techniques, such as tagging, political sidewalk stencils, Banksy and much more.

THURSDAYS – CHESS CLUB with Fairfield County Chess: Grades 2 - 7
As a continuation of our winter offering, students in grades 2-7 at all levels of play are invited to participate in the after school Mead Chess Club. Classes will be instructed by chess professionals following the curriculum of the Chess Club of Fairfield County, designed to build logical and critical thinking, develop patience and concentration, develop executive functions, and connect students with the global and historical evolution of chess strategy.

FRIDAYS - TINKERING STEAM LAB with Frank Pollifrone: Grades K - 5
In this program students will directly apply their curiosity and let creativity guide the way! As a group, students will explore the world of 3D Printing, Bot engineering, computer parts, and will take gadgets apart to see how they operate! There's no right or wrong way to tinker - it's true engineering exploration!! Join the fun in the Mead School's STEAM LAB on Fridays from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Team Sports

All students in Grades 3-8 have the opportunity to participate in seasonal team sports.

Soccer, basketball, cross-country and softball are offered as the primary sports with games scheduled against other similarly-sized schools.

Requirements by Grade:

Grade 3: At least 2 Sports

Grade 4: At least 2 Sports

Grade 5: At least 2 Sports

Grade 6: At least 1 Sport

Grade 7: At least 1 Sport

Grade 8: At least 1 Sport

Participation is strongly encouraged of all the kids.  We moved our boys from another school and never looked back.
