Overview
The Mead School is a unique learning community. The school faculty, administration, staff and parent body are comprised of involved and passionate individuals dedicated to preserving and stimulating the innate curiosity of each child while supporting emotional growth that encourages and defines responsible human relationships. The Mead School Mission states that “The Mead School exists to nurture in each child the power to create a personally meaningful life.” Toward that end, we value the full development of human beings as lifelong learners.

Mead students are economically and ethnically diverse and thrive in an environment where a traditional curriculum is combined with a rich cross-section of writing, art, music, drama and physical expression. They become well-rounded, independent learners, and respectful and interesting human beings who accomplish remarkable things within and outside of our community. The Mead School has nurtured extraordinary alumni. More than ever before, the outside world needs the type of child that we are all proud to call a “Mead Kid”.

Creating a personally meaningful life is the most important challenge any child will face. At Mead, every student has the opportunity to become a learner, a communicator, and a leader in the academic and social realms. Each child is actively engaged in the discovery of how he or she learns best. We believe that individual uniqueness deserves to be honored, and it is the voice of the child that drives the mission of the school. Students at Mead enjoy close relationships with one another and with their teachers, and our two-teacher system guarantees that each child’s needs are addressed. Across the age-spectrum, Home Center Directors become familiar with individual strengths, needs and interests. They are responsible for each child’s physical, social, and emotional well-being. Material Center Directors are curriculum teachers who are responsible for learning in all content areas.

The Mead faculty brings a wide range of academic and professional experience to an outstanding program of study. Over 45% hold advanced degrees. Our teachers provide students with both a “knowledge of self” and the skills to develop as productive and effective learners. They are attuned to current brain and pedagogical research that enables them to address a wide range of student learning styles and developmental needs.

Our parent body is a diverse and interesting group. The school seeks families that are community-minded and committed to active participation in the life of the school. Parents dedicate time and attention to support the School in numerous ways. Parent education programs, fundraising events and student activities are all part of the community effort. Parents and educators work together to support students and their aspirations. Families are attracted to Mead for its renowned child-centered philosophy, strong arts and education programs, and the emphasis on values and community service. High value is placed on the healthy balance Mead achieves between academics and the social-emotional well-being of children. Additionally, Mead both supports and respects freedom of the individual and responsibility to the wider community.
