Our mission is simple. “The Mead School exists to nurture in each child the power to create a personally meaningful life.” The principles and practices educators need to master in order to fulfill the mission, however, are not. It is our mission and the dedication of the faculty to meet the needs of our learners that make us unique.
The Mead School was founded on principles that many educators espouse but few practice. Mead is a vibrant, child-centered community where a child’s voice truly matters. Our educators are continually assessing the needs of our children and working with them to master the skills they need for our ever-changing world. As you will see on the following pages, our goal is to create educational plans and goals that hold to good educational practice while ensuring that children always feel a part of their educational experience.
We believe that learning experiences should be fun yet challenging. When learning new material, children should easily grasp the concept and content. We believe it is the interplay between material presentation and experience of the child that will provide the most successful understanding. In other words, learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to anchor new material.
Mead has a long history of offering the expressive arts as well as interpersonal and intrapersonal education. We don’t offer these curricula as add-ons. They are integral to giving our students the opportunity to explore and understand the range of ways to learn. We want our students to have a broad range of knowledge and understanding as they travel through our system as active, engaged learners.
